Victoria University




Victoria University (VU) was established as a University in 1990, but its history dates back to 1916 when it opened as the Footscray Technical School. It is now one of five Australian universities to combine Higher Education, and Vocational and Further Education (VET). Three Higher Education faculties and three Vocational Education faculties offer more than 500 courses, ranging from certificates to doctorates.

 

Higher Education courses are available in a wide range of areas, including business and management; community and human services; education; engineering (mechanical, electrical, metals manufacturing, building and construction); electronics; transport and logistics; health; science; sport; recreation;  personal services; humanities; performing arts; design; law and legal studies; tourism; marketing; hospitality; and human movement.

Vocational Education courses are offered in the areas of business and management; art and design; multimedia; music and performance; information technology; building and construction; engineering; electronics; science; carpentry; bricklaying; plumbing; hairdressing; beauty therapy; logistics; tourism; personal services; health services; hospitality; social and community services; sport, recreation and fitness; general studies; and foundation and language studies.

The university is noted for advancing knowledge with practical outcomes - all onshore courses include on-the-job learning in industry and/or the community. VU is now one of the largest universities in Australia and one of only five that offers vocational education, through our TAFE faculties, and higher education courses. We also have an English Language Institute, for those students who wish to improve their English language skills before they commence study, which is recognised by the Australian Government.

Three out of VU's eleven campuses are located within Melbourne's Central Business District and another four campuses are within 10 kilometres of the CBD. All campuses are serviced by public transport.

VU’s International Student Support (ISS), a team of staff dedicated to providing support to international students, provides a variety of services including:

    *A ‘meet the local’ program
    *Airport pick-up
    *Counselling
    *A ‘farewell’ program, designed to assist students in returning home after graduation
    *Social trips to local events and tourist attractions.

Accommodation

Melbourne offers a range of options for students seeking accommodation. These include home stay, shared housing, private rental, furnished apartments and hostels. There are also many affordable temporary accommodation options, such as youth hostels and hotels, where students can stay until they find something permanent.

VU also has two student accommodation options for international students. The Student Village is located in Maribyrnong, which is 8km from the CBD. Sunbury Hall is located at VU’s Sunbury campus. Both options provide affordable living with a community atmosphere.

Airport pickup

VUI will organise an airport reception service for students when they arrive at Melbourne Airport and take them to their place of residence free of charge. To take advantage of this service, students must complete a request form and submit it to VUI prior to their arrival in Australia.

 

Orientation meetings

ISS runs a comprehensive orientation program for international students at the beginning of each semester where international students are officially welcomed to VU and given information about enrolments. Students also receive an overview of the assistance available from ISS, VU Student Services and other support areas.

 

Scholarship

Scholarships may be offered by some faculties and departments within VU. Enquiries should be made directly to the faculty offering the course that students wish to study.

Opportunities to study abroad

Victoria University welcomes students from around the world who would like to complete one or two semesters of their home degree at one of our Melbourne campuses.

It is recommended that undergraduate students complete at least one year of their course before studying abroad. There are also some study abroad opportunities for postgraduate students.

In general, applicants are required to have achieved a 65% average in their studies or a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4-point scale. Alternative grading scales will be assessed individually. Students must also meet English language requirements.

The Study Abroad Program fee is set at AUD$7500 per semester. All students are required to enrol in a full course load to meet their student visa obligations.
